I photograph what I can’t quite put into words.

I’m Alexander Koffler, a photographer and filmmaker born in Boston, raised in NYC and currently based in Austin, Texas. Raised among artists and writers, and shaped by creative journeys through Paris, Tokyo, and London, I’ve developed a way of seeing rooted in curiosity, presence, and an instinct for the unexpected.

My work spans street photography, portraiture, documentary, landscapes, and architecture. I’m drawn to the relationship between people and place: how we inhabit a room, move through a city, shape the land, and leave traces of ourselves behind.

Sometimes the photograph begins with a face or an unguarded gesture. Other times, it begins with the weight of a building against the sky, the geometry of a stairwell, or a landscape that makes human scale suddenly apparent. Light, texture, and distance give each subject its own emotional language.

Cinema, music, and poetry inform my sense of rhythm and composition. I’m interested in the tension between order and accident, intimacy and distance, permanence and change. I want a photograph to reward attention—to reveal something slowly and leave room for the viewer’s own experience.

The practice begins with presence: looking closely, questioning the first impression, and staying long enough to discover what initially escaped me. Across people, built spaces, and open terrain, I’m searching for images that hold something of what it feels like to be here.
